sixteen×16 Pixel Art Tutorial

Obviously pixel art is cool once again, and if you are reading this blog, chances are, you lot similar pixel art. As my first actual article on the site, I thought I'd brand a petty tutorial on how to pixel your ain 16*16 sprite, that yous can use every bit a favicon for your website or game. There are many ways to go about pushing pixels, and this is only one of them. Sadly, this tutorial volition not teach you how to describe or come up upward with dainty ideas, deplorable. Too I will not go into program-specific details, you need to accept some basic familiarity with the software y'all want to utilize.

Fire up your app of choice (mine is GraFX2, but you may be more comfy with Photoshop, GIMP or what-take-y'all), and make a new 16*16 pixel document.  Washed? OK, now take my hand and I'll walk you through the steps of pixeling a frog.

Footstep 1 – OUTLINES

What to practise:
Using black colour, make a little drawing inside the bounds. At present, 16×xvi pixels can seem similar a very small infinite, and it is, but it will teach you the starting time lesson of pixel art, to make each pixel count.
Of import:
Make sure your drawing is fully articulated and readable at this stage. If y'all kickoff with a bad drawing, no amount of polish will exist able to save y'all.

Stride 2 – Base COLOURS

What to exercise:
Colour inside your cartoon, simply gear up the basic colours and avoid any shading
Important:
Make sure your base colors work well together and are too brilliant and vivid enough, at this stage the cartoon should be even more than readable than the last stage, non less.

Footstep 3 – SHADOWS

What to do:
For each of the base colours from the previous step, make one darker color and use it to add shadows where needed. For simplicity's sake, imagine your light is coming straight from above.
Of import:
Always review what y'all've washed. Don't be afraid to alter your base colours if, after calculation shadows, you find them too night.

Step 4 – OUTLINE COLOUR

What to exercise:
Add some colour to your blackness outlines. Add as many new colours as you demand. Generally, you'll want your outline colours to be a darker version of the fill colour.
Important:
1 neat trick is to utilise outline colour to imply shading as well. Observe the outlines of the frog's eyes, notice how upper parts are fairly bright, while lower lines are blackness.

Step five – ENJOY (and potentially avowal)

Hopefully your little sprite will cease up looking similar a tiny toy. If it looks terrible try to figure out where y'all went wrong. Mayhap you were likewise ambitious and wanted to put too much particular into such small-scale space? Keep in heed that it is always practiced to simplify the shapes and focus on giving them volume. Peradventure you are only hopeless and the more y'all work on it, the worse it looks? In that case at that place is merely one thing to do: take a break and feast your optics on some practiced pixel art until you regain your vigor. Once you accept tackled the challenges of pixeling, you will be able to better analyze other people's piece of work and identify what makes it good. Conveniently enough, here are some more sprites (one of which is the new favicon for this site) all made using the succulent recipe described above.

Happy artings and see you soon!
